"Budget Deficit Falls 8.6% as Economy Expands."
A steadily expanding economy helped shrink the government's budget
deficit by 8.6 percent to $48.5 billion in May from $53.1 billion a year
earlier, the Treasury Department said Friday. The year-to-year improvement
was even more dramatic for the first eight months of fiscal 1997, which
ends Sept. 30, as the cumulative deficit plummeted 40 percent to $65.4
billion from $108.4 billion in the comparable fiscal 1996 period. Private-sector
analysts say the fiscal 1997 deficit will come in well under $100 billion,
making a fifth straight year of improvement.
